The Siegels, aboard their DeFever 53 RPH aCapella, depart their home port of Castine, Maine.
Who is the target market?
Jeff and Karen Siegel: ActiveCaptain is for boaters who travel overnight on their boats and beyond. The benefit is most obvious for cruisers who travel far from their home port into unfamiliar places, but there is also a true benefit for the boater who voyages on the weekend. We have many users who tell us they found a great anchorage they never knew about right in their own back yard.
ActiveCaptain has over 10,000 boat ramps listed offering boaters with trailerable boats information about where to put in. We've even had people with canoes and kayaks use our boat-ramp data. While we have focused on providing the kind of long-range cruising information that we desire, other categories of boaters are benefiting also.
Truth be told, ActiveCaptain is really for us and our cruising. We selfishly want to know about more marinas and anchorages and integrate all of this live data together in one place. But we figure that if it's giving us the things we need, it's also serving many other people, too.
What is ActiveCaptain? How did you come up with the concept? Who is the target market? What is ActiveCaptain Mobile? What’s in the future from ActiveCaptain? Five years from now, what will the next big thing in electronics be? What’s your background and expertise in technology? What is your background in boating? What are your cruising plans?
